Ten screenshots of ”On to the Next One”, a song from Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3.
My friend Andrew showed me this music video randomly my sophomore year of college, and it has stuck with me as one of the most gorgeously shot music videos I’ve ever seen.
So I am finally following my younger brother’s advice of about three years ago, when he heard my music collection had hit 70-some gigs and went, “You need to clean that out. Have you even listened to all of that?”
At the time, I protested, saying I was working my way through it.
Yesterday, I scanned my computer (using a program called GrandPerspective, which I highly recommend) and realized that if I took out my music folder entirely, my computer would run at least two to three times faster than it currently does, and possibly even faster than that.
I started going through it this morning…and it is so satisfying to delete these files.
It’s satisfying to delete files when I have absolutely no clue where they’ve come from, no idea what kind of music it is, and no real desire to find out.
It’s satisfying to delete files when I knew I was never going to listen to them, even though I “should” because they were popular among my friends.
It’s satisfying to delete files when I know I was only keeping them to impress some boy, or to listen to at some point so I could tell that one person I had taken them up on their recommendation.
Goodbye, Luc!
Goodbye, Carl!
Goodbye, Andrew!
With other things, I don’t think I become this affected - I don’t care what people think of my reading or movie tastes because I take in what I like. But “music cred” was so important to me throughout high school and college.
Honestly - it’s bullshit. I’m going to listen to what I like, and some days that’s going to be musicals, and some days that’s going to be Justin Bieber, and some days it’s going to be some hipster band no one’s ever heard of, and some days who knows? But it’ll be what I want to hear.
You guys, can we talk about how fucking good this is?
We can.
Cause it’s really fucking good.
